Spring Break 2022 Faculty-Led Study Abroad Program
How do countries and societies decide how to provide healthcare to the population? While the US has a largely private system and patchwork of health insurances, other countries have socialized medical care. Come to London, England, where socialized medicine has deep cultural roots and the National Health Service (NHS) provides care for 90% of the country. We’ll stay in the centrally located West End and travel via London’s functional ‘Tube’ and double decker busses. We’ll tour historical sites such as St. Bartholomew's Hospital and Chapel and see King Henry VIII’s charter giving the hospital to the city with a mandate to care for the poor. Explore the British Royal Colleges of Nursing, Medicine and Pharmacy to understand the roots of these professions. We will visit the NHS to understand how it operates and complete two service days interacting with British citizens. In addition to the museums and conversations around how culture influences healthcare decisions, we have time for touring: London’s famous markets, Cathedrals, music history and the Eye.
