The TCNJ Center for Global Engagement
, CIS Abroad
, and the Noor Majan Arabic Institute
have established a combination of programs including: intensive Winter or Summer session OR a semester long program for TCNJ students in the Ibri & Muscat, Oman. Students currently have the opportunity to participate in this program virtually. We hope to launch the in-person version of this program sometime in the near future, which would be complemented with cultural activities, day trips and excursions outside the host city.
The Sultanate of Oman is a nation located in the southwest corner of the Arabian Peninsula, defined by its abundant diversity. A land where the colorful strands of history, traditions, languages, and landscapes are carefully woven into a vibrant tapestry rich in culture. The country is recognized by the World Economic Forum in 2017 at the 4th safest country in the world. Noor Majan has two campus locations: Ibri & Muscat.
- Ibri has a population of over 100,000 and is the regional capital of the Dhahira region. Ibri has long been a strategic crossroad between Oman and the other Gulf states as it lies in almost equal distance to Muscat, Dubai and Abu Dhabi (between 220 and 330 km). As well as between Nizwa in the Omani interior and Sohar on the Omani Gulf coast (both less than two hours drive from Ibri). Given its strategic location, Ibri has a long history as a trade route for caravans, hence its name which means “point of transit.”
- In Muscat, Noor Majan's modern and multi-story building is at the heart of Al-Khuwair’s central marketplace or souq. The campus is surrounded by a plethora of restaurants, stores, cafes and nearby important services such as hospitals and pharmacies. Noor Majan-Muscat’s centralized location in Al-Khuwair places students equidistance from all of the major places of interest in Muscat. The campus is located 10 minutes away from the Al-Qurum Beach, the Muscat Royal Opera House, the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and less than 15 minutes from Muscat International Airport, the historic market in Mutrah and Corniche, and the Omani National Museum/ Palace of the Flag.
Noor Majan Arabic Institute
is the leading Arabic language institute in the Sultanate, crafting educationally rigorous Arabic language and cultural programs, equipping students of all backgrounds with the skills and confidence to engage with the Arab world. Since 2012 Noor Majan has been tirelessly evaluating its programs to meet the linguistic and cultural goals of its students. Noor Majan brings together years of experience in teaching Arabic as a foreign language and cultural education. They believe in providing a rigorous education while fostering the ideal environment for cultural learning. TCNJ students who chose to study with Noor Majan will participate in intensive Arabic language study and have the opportunity to choose some context courses- see Noor Majan's course listings here
. Courses listed here
have already been reviewed and given course equivalents by TCNJ faculty. All unit amounts will be based on contact hours and grades will factor into GPA.
Note: The launch of this partnership/new study abroad location starting Winter 2021 will begin with virtual coursework opportunities.
When the in-person version of this program launches, students can expect these housing accommodations and activities. In Ibri, students will share 3-room suite apartments. Each student shares a room with an adjoining bathroom with another student. This room opens to a common living space and kitchen which they share with students in the other bedrooms of the suite. Laundry facilities and cleaning services are provided. Students are also provided with lunches during the week as they complete their coursework and are transported weekly to the supermarket to pick up food for their other meals. In Muscat, students will live in suite-like apartments on the floors above the Noor Majan offices. Weekly cultural activities are offered at both locations such as a language partner program, movie nights, cooking classes, and opportunities to hear from & connect with the local community. Also on offer are monthly cultural excursions to the sites of interest in Oman.
